If you have ever wondered what a clip-on tie is or who wears one your questions will be answered. ( Don't laugh we get many calls asking us about clip-on ties. )

A clip on –conversion is when we take a regular tie and make it into a pre-made tie. The process of converting a regular tie to a clip-on tie although relatively simple requires the right tools and hardware.

The simplest way to explain the process is holes are made in the fabric with the aid of a carefully calibrated machine that punches the holes in a sequence so that they fit onto a pre-made plastic form. ( as shown in the image on the right ). The plastic form has a metal clip that clips onto a shirt.
Anyone can wear a clip-on tie. However, these ties are mostly worn by people who cannot tie their own tie for health reasons ( loss of dexterity in their hands or fingers ) or for security reasons where the wearer cannot have anything wrapped around their neck. These are also commonly used in the restaurant and services industry as the tie keeps its shape longer and creases less than ties that are continuously tied and untied.

Traditionally clip-on ties were made from a cheap polyester fabric. However over the years as with everything else things have changed and nowdays clip on ties are made out of any fabric. The main requirement is the correct machine , plastic form and shape of the tie.

As we all know silk is a very delicate fabric and therefore needs to be looked after carefully.

Over the years I have been asked on numerous occasions how to take care of a necktie.

I have listed a few of the most common questions and the answers we generally give to those who ask.

Can I dry clean my Silk Necktie?

Dry cleaning a necktie is NOT recommended. The reason is while dry cleaning may remove a stain the dry cleaners will iron the tie. By doing this the rolled edges of the tie will be ironed flat and what you will get back from the dry cleaner is a clean piece of flat silk.

Can I fold my Necktie?

Generally it is not a good idea to fold your necktie. If you travel and need to take your necktie these are the best ways to transport the tie.
1) Fold the necktie in half and then in half again and keep it in the pocket of your jacket or coat.
2) Roll your necktie. If you do this you will need to get a cylindrical tie case to put the tie in.
3) Purchase a necktie case which will allow you to store a few ties when folded. These cases are light and can be put in any suitcase or travel bag.

A good tip is when you reach your destination hang the ties in the bathroom while taking a shower. The steam will get rid of any wrinkles.

What is the best way to remove a stain or spot from my Necktie?

The answer to this is simple. Don't use your necktie as a cloth or napkin. When eating take your tie off, flip it over your shoulder or tuck it into your shirt and then tuck a napkin in your shirt collar. There is nothing more noticeable than a tie that has a stain on it.

How do I remove a wrinkle from my Necktie?

Wrinkles can be steamed out with a small hand steamer or as previously mentioned hang it in the bathroom while taking a hot shower.
If you try to iron it make sure you put a damp cloth on top of the tie and then with the iron setting on silk or delicate lightly iron the tie. Be careful not to press too hard as you do not want to iron the edges flat.

In conclusion treat your neckties as the delicate piece of clothing they are. Make sure you undo the knot at the end of each day the same way you make it. Carefully!
If you pull the knot to undo it you will stretch the interlining thus causing the tie to lose its shape.

Silk Tie Printing Process

This article shows the steps involved in printing a piece of raw silk better known as a Greige Good ( See below for definition. ). This needs to be done before a single tie can be made.

The Manufacturing of a necktie is not as simple a process as one thinks. During a trip to China I took a few pictures not of the actual making of the tie but of just of the process of printing a piece of raw silk. I have written a short explanation next to each image.

This is part of the Printing process where a design is printed on raw silk using a series of screens. Each color requires a new screen. This is a very dirty and tedious process. To help with the drying of the ink the temperatures in these printing factories are extremely hot. Roughly about 100+ degrees Fahrenheit.

In this picture is where the dyes which you see in the red containers on the left are put onto a piece of silk to get the color match correct according to the customers color requirements. Workers will lay pieces of raw silk on the table and test different colors to get the right mix for each screen. On the bottom right you will see a few more screens for the particular design resting against the table. Each screen is for a different color. The average printed pattern has about 7-9 colors.

Once the colors are all tested and corrected it's off to the printing table. Raw silk fabric is laid on tables each table being 100ft long. The screen is then laid on the silk and the ink is poured on and spread evenly on the screen. ( Hence the term screen printing. ) The screen is then lifted and moved to the adjacent piece and the process is repeated until the entire length is complete. This process is repeated with each screen which adds another color to the silk until all the colors have been added.

Once the silk has been printed and is completely dry the silk goes to the washing plant where it goes through a washing process to remove all enzymes and particles left on the raw silk. From this image you can see that this is not just a big washing machine but a carefully built washing plant. The silk is fed in on rollers so it is kept flat and straight throughout the washing process.

Once through washing its off to be dried.

Once washed the printed silk goes through a series of dryers on rollers and comes out the other side ready to be sent to the factory where it is made into a necktie, bow tie, Ascot or for that matter any garment that uses a printed silk.

From the above one can see that the simple tie that one wears has gone through transformation from the silkworm it came from to be that elegant tie, or bowtie that you see on BuyYourTies.com.

Off the topic of Ties for the moment I came across an interesting article from a trade publication that I thought I would say something about.

Because I sell ties and have grown up in the necktie industry my friends think I know about fashion. Well I may know a bit but really nothing more than anyone with an interest in reading magazines and journals would know. I know how a tie is made, I know what fabric makes a good tie and what doesn't but with suits I really am clueless.

When I need a suit I ask my friends who are in the suit industry for advice. I believe that you should always ask a professional and then make the final decision.

The article is about " THE PRICE OF A GOOD SUIT" and What's the difference between a value priced suit, a $2,000 suit and a $3,000 suit?

Various factors come into play:

There is an obvious answer to this question, ..“MARKUP.” However, what are the actual differences.

Other more technical answers are as follows:

1)BRANDING and MARKETING. These two factors can significantly impact the selling price of the garment.

2)WORKMANSHIP. Poor workmanship may be visible to the naked eye. Handmade suits require a lot of skill and is very time consuming.

3)FABRIC. The only characteristic of the fabric that influences the price of the garment is the price of the fabric, not the quality.

At the end of the day what really matters as in everything in life is perception of quality. Americans like a lighter fabric and the word " Super " means something. Case in point (Super 130's, Super 150's. ). Europeans prefer a heavier more tailored suit made with more durable fabrics and a European feel.

In conclusion price/value is something that is hard to quantify. Some people like more expensive hand-tailored suits and wont trade down while others cannot understand why anyone would spend $1000.00 and up to $8000.00 or even more on a true handmade bespoke suit.

A brief history of the Ascot.

An ascot tie, or ascot, is a narrow neckband with wide pointed wings. This wide, formal tie is usually traditional in design, folded over, and fastened with a stickpin or tie tack.

Ascots are usually made from a lightweight silk as they are worn against the skin and are more comfortable.

The ascot is descended from the earlier type of cravat widespread in the early nineteenth century, made of heavily starched linen and elaborately tied around the neck. Later in the 1880s, amongst the upper-middle-class in Europe men began to wear a more loosely tied version for formal daytime events.
It remains a feature for weddings today.
The Royal Ascot race meeting at the Ascot Racecourse, gave the ascot its name.
The ascot was still commonly worn for business with morning dress in the late 19th and very early 20th centuries.

Most people think of aristocratic old men when they hear the word Ascot. While more mature fashion plates may still don ascots, young bloods have pumped up the presence of the more-than-century-old piece.

Everyone has a story so for those of you interested here is mine:

My great uncle together with his brother ( my grandfather ) started manufacturing neckties in South Africa way back in 1938. Naturally my father went into the business so it seems like I was destined for a life of Neckwear.

While my friends were at college becoming doctors, lawyers and accountants I had the privilege of working as a salesman for the largest neckwear company in America ( if not the world ). For me this was better than any college education. I was taught everything from how a quality necktie is made to how it is merchandised in a store and finally sold to the consumer.

I took this education and in 1997 started a small wholesale neckwear company in my garage and started manufacturing neckties in China.

In 2000 a friend joined me and together we set out travelling to mens stores across America and showing at trade shows. We were relentless. We hardly ever came home and when we did we spent all our time unloading neckties and packing orders. We just figured that we would outwork everybody.

The rest is history. After a couple of tedious trips to China and a huge learning curve we started gaining a significant amount of market share from other more established manufacturers.

We were successful and more importantly very profitable.

In March 2005 after spending the better part of 8 years travelling and reaching my goals I got bored and needed a new challenge. My friend took over the company and I set out to try my luck as an online retailer.

One month later I started BuyYourTies.com. It has now been 3 years and BuyYourTies.com has established itself as one of the largest and most diverse suppliers of Neck Ties and Bow Ties on the web. Besides purchasing neckwear from other suppliers we are also a manufacture all of our own Fashion, X-Longs , Bow ties and Novelty Ties.

The word bow tie comes from the French word, jabot which is pronounced ja-bow. This was originally a 17th century pre-made lace cravat. Later, in the 18th and 19th centuries bow ties came in other types of materials and designs.
The formal black bow tie became popular back in 1886 when Pierre Lorillard V invented the tuxedo as an alternative to the Tailcoats which were worn with White Bow Ties.

Bow Ties come either as Self-Tie Bow Ties or Pre-Tied Bow Ties and are now days most commonly available in either a silk of polyester fabric. As Bow Ties are as unique as the people who wear them hundreds of different patterns exist.
